Late Summer Nights

Passing cars, dancing shadows, cool breeze, brightly lit eyes, a distinct feeling of summer break in a city of students. Everyone's gone on vacation, only you and the growing sense of seclusion wrap you up in the city's pine trees and warm weather.

At midnight you pass through the city's night market and you wearily walk to the food stands occupying the road. The rare groups of tourists that happen to pass by during this time of the year brings in a strange sense of company, you eat in the midst of them, and in the midst of the stalls selling cheap and exotic food. The street lights splash the surroundings with an orange light and you drink and eat the cold away; eating on the plastic tables set up by the stalls. Further down the road are numerous shops set up to sell clothes; people from all over the country looking at the incredibly cheap wares found exclusively in this city.

A friend then offers you a ride home in the middle of the night, you hop on and catch up on this person you see so rarely when there's school. The lights of the car illuminate his face but only vaguely. You laugh off the city's seclusion for a moment then you gently embrace it as this friend drops you off and says good bye. It would probably be a long time before you see him again.

Then you walk back, slowly, to your house and look, for one last time, at the night sky dotted with stars. You're home.

And you're safe.
